How did you both meet?

Francisco was finishing his last week of chemotherapy. I worked in the hospital and had heard what a charismatic, kind, energetic, and strong person he was. One day I came by his room to congratulate him on finishing treatment. The next time I saw him was about a year later. Some mutual friends connected us as Francisco wanted to write a book of tips for young adults going through chemotherapy. My job was to lead a support program for chronically ill teens and young adults, so we shared a passion. We created the book, and three years later we connected again to start a nonprofit organization together where we create short films about young patients in the hospital to tell their stories. On the day we signed our official 501c3 paperwork with the lawyer, Francisco told me he loved me.

How did your husband propose?

I was expecting a Christmas proposal. It never came. But on December 28th, Francisco proposed to me in front of my mom and out of state friends who he organized for the surprise proposal at the beach in my hometown.

What was your wedding inspiration? (think decor, overall theme and feel of the day, etc.)

We were married January 2nd, so we incorporated the holidays with a refreshing take for the new year; everyone seemed ready to begin fresh after 2020. Deep reds and soft whites in the florals, with navy and gold accents at the reception.

What was your favorite design element of your wedding?

With our wedding planner Melanie’s vision, as well as the venue’s Director, Heather Miller, I felt like the entire space sparkled with holiday magic! I loved my florals by Fern and Curl, and our outdoor terrace space with the party lights on the water!

Describe some of your favorite wedding details and how you came up with them?

Because of Covid, Francisco’s entire family in Brazil could not come, nor could most of my family who live in New York, so we made a memory table to honor those with pictures and mementos.

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding day?

Our personalized message at our wedding mass. Father Al, our Gainesville priest, travelled the three hours to our wedding to give the most special ceremony for us. We watch our video back and reflect on his words.

Please describe your cake (if any):

Our wedding cake was white, simple, and elegant with florals.

Can you please list your vendors:

Planner: Melanie Paige Thompson from Melanie Paige Events and Design. Venue: Eau Gallie Yacht Club. Cake: Best Little Cake House. Video: Johnny Lascha from CC Video Productions. Dress: Olivia Bowen Bridal. Limo: Hot Rayz. DJ: DJ Dave from DJ Shane Entertainment. Best Photographers Ever: KV Photography!!

Any advice for those planning their wedding now?

Hiring a planner is worth the investment. Our planner Melanie is the best! I never stressed at all on our wedding day. I was so happy and present the entire time.

What was your biggest surprise on your wedding day?

I received a lot of encouragement to take it all in and soak up every moment because it will go by so fast. I realized it was possible to make the most of every moment and do so with love, not needing to get anxious about anything. Having a great vendor team really gave me permission to let go and engage in the experience. But having the most loving husband for me helps me live that mentality every day.

What one moment will last with you both forever?

Seeing each other for the first time as I came down the aisle at the church.

What song did you walk down the aisle to?

Carrie Underwoods sings a slow rendition of Joyful Joyful. We had musicians perform that rendition live.

What song played for your first dance?

A Broadway medley of “Go the Distance” from Hercules

What are you most looking forward to as a married couple?

Becoming more loving vessels for each other every day and using that love to uplift those around us.

What did you like the most about working with KV Photography?

Ed and Val, we admire your creativity, cinematic style, and unique take on showcasing our love. Your personalities were exactly what we wanted around us, too. If we knew you, we would have totally invited you to our wedding if you weren’t our photographers. You both are so talented, and we are so honored to have the chance to work with you and savor our memories through your images.
