Callan & Kelsey | Casa Feliz | Winter Park Wedding Photographer
How did you both meet?
We met on Tinder! Kelsey’s friends stole her phone after a recent break-up and they “swiped right” on me. We met in person at a gay bar in town the next day, and a month later I moved to Pennsylvania with her!
How did your partner propose?
I surprised Kelsey with a trip to Europe for her birthday. We landed in London in the morning, and I had scheduled a photographer to meet us in Notting Hill, but our plane was delayed. The subway system broke down and our hotel room wasn’t ready. So, we were running late, but we rushed to go meet our photographer. I had the ring in my pocket the entire flight and was so nervous. She was clueless even when we met the photographer, she thought we were just getting professional photos taken. I got down on one knee and said, “Wouldn’t it be hilarious if I just proposed right here?” She was completely speechless, but eventually said yes! We spent the next week traveling to Paris, Bordeaux, and throughout Ireland celebrating our engagement!
What was your wedding inspiration? (think decor, overall theme and feel of the day, etc.)
It changed every day. I kept telling Kelsey I wanted lots of greenery and spring flowers and wanted it to look like an enchanted fairy garden. She wasn’t having any of it. What we ended up with was absolutely perfect and beautiful and I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
What was your favorite design element of your wedding?
The hot pink neon Wettach sign on the wall was our favorite. It is hanging in our bedroom now.
Describe some of your favorite wedding details and how you came up with them?
I would say who we chose to do our readings for the ceremony. Callan is very close to her Aunt Liz. The book she read was a book we read at the end of every summer and was an incredibly special part of Callan’s childhood. Kelsey had her grandmother read a beautiful wedding blessing. Gram is an incredibly important part of Kelsey’s life, she even lived with her for a while, and l think might be her favorite person in the world. To have her read at our wedding, after we were unsure how Kelsey’s family was going to be about the whole same-sex marriage thing, was such a wonderful moment for both of us. It really solidified that her family had accepted our relationship and would be there for us to support this marriage.
What was the most memorable moment of your wedding day?
The first dance!!!! We practiced that dance for months. Kelsey was determined to do a full-on choreographed dance because she didn’t want to just be swaying back and forth, and I was so nervous that we were not going to be able to pull it off. But it was a hit. Especially with the crowd screaming and cheering with every turn, it was so surreal and special. Best part was I didn’t tear my dress and Kelsey never stepped on my train!
Please describe your cake (if any):
Lemon Razz!! Kelsey’s request. She doesn’t like sweets, but she fell in love with this cake we tried from Morgan Hunter. Simple and classic and so delicious. Can’t wait to eat it again on our 1st anniversary. Better than the cake, was the Batman cookies Callan surprised Kelsey with to go along with the cake. Some couples have a groom’s cake, we had bridal batman cookies!!!
Can you please list your vendors:
KV Photography, Blush by Brandee Garr (Jess) aka superstar who brought the lightsabers, Arthurs, Makeover Station (Simone), Morgan Hunter desserts, Cinemology, Breezeway Trio, Maureen May string quartet, Our DJ Rocks (Jennie) the mash-up QUEEN, bridal finery (Tali), Raining Roses.
Any advice for those planning their wedding now?
Be kind to yourself and your partner during the process. Make it what YOU want despite all the judgement and opinions or ideas other people have. At the end of it all, it’s your day! You want to be able to look back at it with zero regrets and love every single aspect because it was all yours! Also, try not to fight with your mom or bridesmaids too much. You still want friends after the wedding is over.
What was your biggest surprise on your wedding day?
How fast it went. Everyone tells you it flies by. But you don’t really believe it until it’s happening. I tried so hard to take every moment in and enjoy it all and it was over in the blink of an eye!
What one moment will last with you both forever?
Last dance. We had decided we weren’t going to do a last dance. At the last minute I snuck up to the DJ and asked her to play Kelsey’s favorite song, “Vienna” by Billy Joel when everyone else had gone outside to prep for our exit. It was wonderful to be able to surprise her and have one moment by ourselves after the craziness of that whole day to just look into my wife’s eyes and realize we were finally married!!!
What song did you walk down the aisle to?
Serse, HWV 40: Largo for Callan, and Jesu Joy of man’s desiring for Kelsey
What song played for your first dance?
This Will Be (An Everlasting Love) by Natalie Cole
What are you most looking forward to as a married couple?
Honestly, it’s the exact same and we love it. We’re just focusing on our careers, saving up to buy a house, and looking to have kids within the next few years!! Very excited to see where life takes us.
What did you like the most about working with KV Photography?
ED & VAL!!!! Talk about dream team/superstars. They made us feel so comfortable, we never felt we had to fake the smiles, they said funny things to make us laugh and get the most authentic, amazing, and beautiful shots. You spend so much time with your photographer and other vendors you want to make sure they are people that you like, and Ed and Val are impossible not to like!!! Their quality and professionalism are unmatched.
